Round ii - First
Adwaith W.S.

" The contest was a perfect excuse or me to make more rap music! I read the article, played a metronome, and started throwing random verses until something landed. The two days I spent on this were such a lovely break from my otherwise hectic schedule. Kudos to the Reporter's Collective for encouraging political art! "

round ii - second
Akshit Chawla

" Working on my Polychrome video was super fun. It made me critically think about how hardcore news stories can be presented in an engaging digital format — that does not involve a massive budget. The process was a learning in itself — I was free to try anything I wanted, without worrying about what is traditionally considered right or wrong. "

round 11 - third
Harini Kannan

" The Polychrome contest gave me an exciting opportunity to explore explainer animation for editorials. The given story was very engaging yet serious, and it was challenging to animate it with a lighter touch. Since receiving recognition, I hope to create many more such videos for public awareness, and I thank the contest for that. "

Third : Rs. 5,000
Rency Philip

“The competition was exciting for me because I had to write, act, shoot and edit the video all within the confines of my own space... I pored over the articles to understand what part of them I could use that may interest and concern general citizens such as me.”

We are back with the second round of our visual story contest, Polychrome. Our inaugural edition saw artists from across the country participating. Their creative take on our stories amazed us. This encouraged us to look for more collaborations and engage with new media to tell our stories. Here’s to another round of creative fun!

The call is for visual artists across India to send us videos of less than 60 seconds to tell the story linked here. The videos should touch the core of the issue.

About the Competition

The Reporters’ Collective produces stories in written format. Our stories are full of details that many people simply do not care about. Some friends tell us they prefer listening to podcasts. Some tell us we should experiment with videos. Some push us towards infographics. And we would love to incorporate all the requests in our work, but for the lack of resources, we are stopped short.

We realise the need to engage with other media to tell our stories better for diverse audiences. We are specifically interested in youthful innovation that broadens the scope of journalistic storytelling.

And this is our step in that direction.

We appreciate newness and bold experiments! We are open to any and all the elements that you wish to creatively use – images, live footage, drawings, animations and sounds.

The Collective does deep-dive investigative work with cost-efficiency. We would like a similar approach with video-creation – videos should be innovative, not expensive.

Your work should also not infringe on copyright requirements or use abusive language. The top three videos will receive an award.

They will also be displayed on our website and promoted on our social media.

Submission requirements: The videos have to be uploaded in the form at the end of this page. The resolution has to be 1080 p vertical at 25 fps, video codec H.264, sound codec AAC @10 Mbps.

Eligibility: All Indian citizens residing in India are eligible.

Evaluation Criteria: The jury will select winning entries based on presentation of the content, creative quality and innovation.

Prize: Cash reward of Rs 10,000, Rs 7,500 and Rs 5,000 for the first, second and third top selections.

Copyright: The copyright of the three winning entries will remain with The Reporters’ Collective. If the Collective earns any direct revenue from the sale of the winning entries, it will share 40% of the revenue (net of taxes) with the author/artist. The creator will have moral rights to their work and can use it for non-commercial purposes.

Deadline: We will accept submissions till February 15, 11:59 pm

For any queries, write to us at polychrome@reporters-collective.in with “Polychrome Query” in the subject line.

Are you an artist interested in experimenting across forms? Then this is your chance! The Reporters’ Collective is excited to announce the third round of its visual story contest, Polychrome. Earlier editions saw artists from across the country participate. Their creative takes – as animations, recorded skits and rap videos – on our reported stories amazed us.

Every round of this contest encourages us to look for more such collaborations and engage with new media artists to retell our journalistic stories. Here’s to yet another round of creative fun! We invite artists across India to create visual stories on the linked story.

In this story, our associate member Hemant Gairola found bank executives being lured by illegal incentives – iPhones, foreign jaunts, kickbacks – to boost sales. This compelled bank executives to force their staff to sell insurance to unsuspecting customers who ended up with unwanted policies. Send us your artistic interpretations using the submission form below.

What is the contest?

The Collective produces stories in written format. Our stories are full of details that many people often miss while reading. Some friends tell us they prefer listening to podcasts. Some tell us to experiment with videos. Some push us towards infographics. While we would love to incorporate all the requests, our strength lies in writing long, investigative stories. And, we hope to collaborate with artists to retell our stories in an engaging way, which is more accessible to a larger audience.

We realise the need to engage with new media to tell our stories better for diverse audiences. We are specifically interested in youthful innovation that broadens the scope of journalistic storytelling.

This is our step in that direction.

What can you create?

Anything! As long as these videos are no more than 60 seconds and tell the story linked above in an innovative [and fun] way. The videos should touch the core of the issue.

We appreciate newness and bold experiments! We are open to any and all the elements that you wish to use – images, theatre, live footage, drawings, animations and sounds.

Take a look at our previous submissions. Our past winners have experimented with different mediums of storytelling – Adwaith chose rap to tell the story, Harini picked cool explainer while Rency told the story with a skit performance. Their work will give you an idea about what can be created.

What to keep in mind?

The Collective does deep-dive investigative work with cost-efficiency. We would like a similar approach with video-creation – videos should be innovative, not expensive.

Your work should also not infringe on copyright requirements or use abusive language.

The top three videos will receive an award. They will also be displayed on our website and promoted on our social media.

Deadline: We will accept submissions till JUNE 25, 11:59 PM.

For any queries, write to us at polychrome@reporters-collective.in with “Polychrome Query” in the subject line.
